'Snacking' has a negative ring to it for a lot of people. Sugary, fatty snacks packed with little nutritional value aren't the best choice for your body, that's true. But did you know that snacking smarter actually comes with a whole lot of benefits? We'll break them down and hopefully win you over on the power of good snacking, at home or at work.
Snack it smart
Snacks with low nutritional value aren't a great way to fuel your body. They leave you hungry again in no time, and they're not doing your heart, blood vessels or cholesterol any favours either. Best to skip those where you can — though that doesn't mean you need to give up on snacking altogether! The more nutritious options come with some real perks:
- Smarter snacking supports an active metabolism. Your body keeps burning nicely, helping you dodge those typical between-meal slumps. Hello, focus and productivity! Not just a win for you, but for your employer or the people around you too.
- Eating regularly throughout the day helps you avoid hunger attacks or cravings for something less nutritious. So if you're mindful of what you eat, snacking smart is a must! It also keeps hunger in check, meaning you'll eat less at your next meal.
- Your colleagues benefit from your smarter snacking too: your eating habits can inspire them and help build a healthier work environment. And who wouldn't want to work for a company with a positive, health-conscious image?
Snack it regularly
It's a great idea to add more nutritious snacks to your daily routine. Bring them along wherever you go and try to eat something every 2 to 3 hours — that way you keep your metabolism ticking over. The best time to snack is different for everyone: pick a moment right before you'd usually hit that dip or feel hungry.
Snacking matters when you're working out too. Go for a snack with slow-release carbs before you break a sweat, then reward yourself with a protein-rich snack to recover afterwards. In the evening, a fibre-rich snack is the way to go: it helps keep your blood sugar steady.
Snack it real good
How do you know which snacks are the better choice? Unfortunately, you won't find the answer in the nutrition table! Check the ingredient list for natural ingredients instead. These are mostly made up of (pure) proteins, (polyunsaturated) fats, carbohydrates (with a low glycemic index) and fibre. Think fruit, vegetables, dairy, nuts, seeds or pips: they're the perfect addition to a more nutritious diet, and they taste great too!
If you don't recognise the ingredients, that's usually not a great sign: emulsifiers, anthocyanins, acesulfame, sucralose... You'll come across these often, unfortunately, but try to avoid them where you can.
