    Counting calories

We all know it's better to avoid certain foods as much as possible. Think of foods with trans fats, processed sugars... every single one of these ingredients sends the calorie counter climbing.

Some count calories to lose weight, others to gain it. The principle looks simple: eat less than you burn and you'll lose weight, eat more and you'll gain it. That's partly true, but it's an oversimplification of the whole picture. Let's break it down for you in more detail.

    Calorie, what?

Have you ever stopped to think about what a calorie actually is? Well, a calorie is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius. So it's simply a way to measure energy.

The body gets this energy from nutrients and sends it to your organs so they keep functioning. In other words, it's fuel for your body.

Not all calories are created equal!

Everything you eat and drink contains calories (except water), which we can sort by quality: good, bad and very bad calories.

    • Good: vegetables, fruit, oats, nuts, seeds, wholegrain products...
    • Bad: soft drinks, sweets...
    • Very bad: products with trans fats, pre-packaged meals...

A more nutritious lifestyle isn't just about how many calories you eat, but about what you eat.

Did you know that 50g of dried fruit adds up to 180 calories? That sounds like a lot, but dried fruit is packed with vitamins, fibre and antioxidants. So skipping this treat would be a real shame!

    Our advice

Go for balanced, nutritious food that's naturally rich in beneficial nutrients (fibre, vitamins, minerals...). Think nuts, seeds, vegetables, wholegrain products, fruit...
