Lots of people choose to eat gluten-free, for all kinds of reasons. You don't need coeliac disease or a gluten intolerance to eat gluten-free and enjoy the benefits.
The "gluten free" claim on a food label is obviously hugely important for people with a gluten intolerance, as they can become genuinely very ill from eating gluten. But even if you're sensitive to gluten, or choose to skip it for wellbeing reasons, this claim makes it easy to pick more nutritious, gluten-free snacks and food.
So what exactly is gluten?
Gluten are proteins found in various grains, such as wheat, rye, spelt, and more. You'll find gluten in the wholemeal flour, flour, and meal made from these grains. Gluten gives foods a light, airy texture and adds elasticity. But some people don't tolerate gluten well, or at all, and often we don't even realise it. Try it yourself: skip gluten for a while and see what happens. That way, you can really feel the effect of eating gluten-free on your body, and how your body actually reacts (or reacted) to gluten.
Studies and scientists disagree on whether eating gluten-free is useful or safe if you don't have coeliac disease. We're not here to make scientific claims — we just want to give you the information so you can make the food choice that feels right for you.
Whether you fancy skipping gluten now and then for some variety, or simply can't tolerate it, the "gluten-free" label makes it easy to quickly pick a safe, more nutritious snack. One that gives you energy until your next meal and puts a smile on your stomach too!
